Motorola Droid Wallpaper Resolution

Wallpaper resolution or size on the Motorola Droid is somewhat confusing...  The background Droid wallpaper consists of a single image file (jpg or png) with different portions of the wallpaper image displayed depending on which section of the home screen you are currently viewing.

The entire size of the background wallpaper is: 960x854 pixels.  Given screen dimensions of 3.22 inches by 1.81 inches, the Motorola Droid wallpaper resolution has a staggering 265 DPI!

Each wallpaper subsection measures 480x854 pixels in size and is utilized in the following way...  New in Android v2.2, there are 5 scrollable screens (assuming you're using the stock Android home):

Anyway to make the wallpaper static?

So when you scroll between the screens, the photo doesn't move with it.

Android 2.2?

Is the information here still valid for Android 2.2's five screens (as opposed to the previous three: left, center, right)? Thanks -RL

You make an excellent point

We've updated our image accordingly to the new Android v2.2 layout on the Moto Droid...  Thanks for the heads-up.

DPI, Inches, and Pixels are proprtional

Its easy:
480x854 pixel count, side scrolls half a screen each way to make 960x854.
1.81"x3.22" actual dimensions, 3.22/854=265 DPI
So 3.62"x3.22" @ 265 DPI @ 960x 854
Plug in any two of these and the photo app will calculate the other.

If you put in the inch dimension @ 72 DPI then yeah, it's gunna be off.

Backgrounds

So, i got a new home app. and i have 3++ pages. how would i go about making a background to support the amount of pages i have?

Droid Wallpaper Resolution

As far as I know, the Droid wallpaper resolution does not change...  I use Home++ and the wallpaper size is still 960x854.  I have customized the image to be horizontally seamless (no vertical mismatched edge) when scrolling through the multiple screens.

Resolution

I figured out what them dimensions were, but no matter what the image still looks kind of pixelated. At what resolution should my wallpapers be built at? I used 72 dpi, i am going to try 300dpi and see what happens. So, basically, do you know why my image is still pixalated and not sharp.

Pixelated Images?

Pixelation of images can happen for several reasons:

  • What was the size of the image you resized to the droid wallpaper resolution of 960x854?
    • You may be better off taking your original image and resizing to only one of the dimensions (either 960 wide or 854 tall) and cropping the other dimension to the accurate width/height.  This will prevent "stretching" or "squishing" of pixels.
  • What application are you using to resize your image?
    • An application like Photoshop (yeah, I know, expensive) can help resize images by using an algorithm to determine how to handle the addition or subtraction of pixels without just matching the new pixels to the surrounding pixels.

NOTE: The DPI of an image will really only impact the printing of the image.  The Motorola Droid will only display the image at the native screen resolution regardless of DPI.
