How to Scan QR Codes and Barcodes to Link to Android Market Applications

Using a barcode scanner application on your Android phone can help locate apps you want to download quickly in the Android Market.

As you may have noticed on Tech-Karma.com, we've been posting two-dimensional (2D) barcodes also referred to as QR codes.  When you see these barcodes on Tech-Karma.com or anywhere on the web, you can use a barcode scanner app on your Android phone to scan the barcode.

Follow the steps outlined below to locate and install a barcode scanner application and then learn how to scan the barcodes with your Android phone to gain direct access to applications on the Android Market...

 

 

To locate a compatible barcode scanner application:

  • On your Android phone, open the Android Market.
  • Search the Android Market for "Barcode".
  • Locate the "Barcode Scanner" application developed by the ZXing Team.
  • Download and install the application.
  • Open the application and your ready to scan barcodes!

 

To use the Barcode Scanner application to scan barcodes to find applications in the Android Market

  • With the Barcode Scanner application running, move your phone toward the monitor.  Pay special attention to line the 2D barcode (QR code) up within the scanning window of the application.
  • If you have problems scanning, continue to move your phone slowly toward and away from your monitor.
  • Tap the "Open Browser" button once the 2D barcode (QR code) has been scanned.
  • This link should take you directly into the Android Market page for the Android application or Android widget.
  • Install as you would other applications from the Android Market.

  • You can use the Barcode at left labelled Barcode Scanner Application to test with.  When you scan the barcode and tap the "Open Browser" button, you should be taken directly to the Barcode Scanner applicationpage on the Android Maket.
